WAEC result crisis deepens as official alleges irregularities, technical glitches The controversy surrounding the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results has intensified following allegations of grading irregularities and technical glitches by an official of an educational advocacy organisation. Concerns over the integrity of the results emerged after several schools and parents questioned what they described as unusually poor performances by candidates who had previously demonstrated strong academic records. The complaints have fuelled fresh scrutiny of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and its examination processes. An education official, Alex Onyia, Chief Executive Officer of Educare, alleged that technical problems associated with the computer-based testing system may have adversely affected candidates’ scores. He called for a comprehensive review of the released results and urged WAEC to provide greater transparency regarding its grading methodology. School administrators have also raised concerns over what they described as a sharp decline in the performance of students despite sustained investments in teaching quality, learning facilities and examination preparation. Some schools reported that candidates who had consistently excelled in internal assessments received grades significantly below expectations in key subjects. The growing discontent has sparked calls for an independent audit of the examination process, with stakeholders demanding clarification on whether technical glitches or errors in result processing may have affected candidates’ outcomes. Responding to the concerns, WAEC maintained that its result processing procedures remain rigorous and quality-assured. The examination body stated that investigations into the complaints were ongoing and assured affected candidates and schools that any identified issues would be addressed appropriately. WAEC noted that withheld results could either be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations. The development has heightened anxiety among thousands of candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, as uncertainty over the credibility of the results continues to dominate discussions within Nigeria’s education sector.

Fidelity Bank Plc will on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, host its Quarterly Business Forum in Kano State, bringing together entrepreneurs, business owners, industry leaders and other stakeholders to explore strategies and opportunities for sustainable business growth in Northern Nigeria.

Themed “Positioning Northern Businesses for Growth,” the forum will focus on practical measures to strengthen business operations, improve financial management, expand access to finance, leverage digital solutions, increase market reach and build resilient enterprises.

The Kano edition follows the success of the Bank’s previous Quarterly Business Forum in Port Harcourt, which provided entrepreneurs with practical business insights, industry connections and opportunities for sustainable growth.

Speaking ahead of the event, Divisional Head, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises Banking, Fidelity Bank Plc, Ugochi Osinigwe, said the forum was designed to provide businesses with the knowledge, connections and opportunities required to improve their competitiveness.

According to her, taking the initiative to Kano demonstrates the bank’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs across Nigeria, particularly businesses in the Northern region.

The forum will feature sessions led by industry experts and business leaders, with participants expected to gain actionable insights and opportunities to network, exchange experiences and explore solutions to challenges confronting businesses in the current economic environment.

The Quarterly Business Forum forms part of Fidelity Bank’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) sector through access to knowledge, capacity building, financial services and strategic business networks.

The bank recently received the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) Service Ambassadors Award for Highest Impact on MSMEs Accessing Credit for the First Time, in recognition of its efforts to deepen financial inclusion and improve access to credit for businesses.

Fidelity Bank Plc is a full-fledged commercial deposit money bank serving more than 10 million customers through digital banking channels, 255 business offices across Nigeria and its United Kingdom subsidiary, FidBank UK Limited.

The bank has also received several local and international recognitions, including the 2025 DBN Innovation Award for MSME support, Best Retail and SME Bank Award from Independent Newspapers, Best Bank for Export & Trade Finance and Most Innovative Bank of the Year at the 2025 BusinessDay Banks and Financial Institutions Awards, and Nigeria’s Best Private Bank at the 2025 Euromoney Awards.
