The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun as the recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso, declaring that his purported removal by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, has no legal backing.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, stated the government’s position in a press release dated October 23, 2026, following reports of the traditional ruler’s action.
Ojo explained that the Chiefs Law of Oyo State clearly defines the authority responsible for the appointment, suspension and removal of recognised chieftaincy holders.
According to him, Section 26(1) of the law, Cap. 28, 2000, reserves the power to appoint, suspend or depose a Part II recognised chieftaincy holder exclusively for the state governor.
He maintained that the purported removal of Balogun by the Soun was inconsistent with the law governing traditional institutions in the state.
The commissioner stressed that the action could not alter Dr. Balogun’s status as the duly recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso land.
He urged members of the public to disregard claims that the chief had been removed, reaffirming the state government’s recognition of him as the holder of the title.
The development highlights the legal framework governing chieftaincy administration in Oyo State, particularly the statutory powers of the governor over recognised traditional titles.
