The Oyo State Government has warned residents against heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses amid forecasts of above-normal temperatures, urging them to take precautions to protect their health.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, issued the advisory on Monday, October 26, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
Citing forecasts of prolonged dry conditions and rising temperatures potentially influenced by global warming and El Niño-related weather patterns, Aderinto advised residents to drink water regularly, wear light clothing, ensure proper ventilation and seek shade or cooler environments during periods of intense heat.
He also urged households and businesses to conserve water, avoid wastage and store reasonable quantities where necessary.
Residents were encouraged to plant trees to provide shade and help reduce surrounding temperatures.
The commissioner advised employers and outdoor workers to take regular breaks in cooler areas and, where possible, schedule strenuous activities for cooler hours of the day.
He warned residents not to ignore symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, weakness, nausea and excessive sweating, stressing that suspected heatstroke requires immediate medical attention.
The government urged residents, business owners, employers and community leaders to comply with the advisory to minimise the health and environmental risks associated with rising temperatures.
