‎For years, Dave Green and Andrea Urmston shared a friendship that felt unusually close.
‎
‎The BBC reported that they worked at Manchester Airport, exchanged calls and text messages outside work, and often joked that they could finish each other’s sentences. Neither suspected that the bond they shared went far deeper than friendship.
‎
‎The truth emerged during a casual telephone conversation that would change both their lives forever.
‎Dave mentioned that he had been adopted as a baby and revealed his birth name: Stuart Proudlove.
‎
‎The surname immediately stunned Andrea.
‎
‎”I kind of froze,” she later recalled.
‎Proudlove was her maiden name, and she had grown up knowing she had an older brother who had been placed for adoption before she was born.
‎
‎Convinced it could not be a coincidence, Andrea quickly contacted her mother, Susan, to verify details. When the birth date matched, she knew she had found the brother she had spent much of her life wondering about.
‎
‎”I was shaking and my heart was pounding,” Andrea said. “I’d finally found him.”
‎
‎What followed was an emotional reunion decades in the making.
‎
‎Andrea drove Dave to meet their mother, who had never stopped thinking about the son she had given up for adoption.
‎
‎ There were tears, hugs and disbelief as mother and son finally came face to face.
‎For Dave, the discovery carried another remarkable twist. For years, his job had taken him along a route that passed his biological mother’s home and the school Andrea attended. He had unknowingly travelled within metres of his birth family countless times.
‎
‎”I’d found my birth mum and a family I never really knew existed,” he said.
‎The reunion fulfilled a promise Andrea had made as a child.
‎
‎Growing up, she knew about her missing brother and often asked her mother whether they could bring him home. When told that adoption did not work that way, she made a vow that one day she would find him.
‎
‎Her mother, meanwhile, never gave up hope. She sought help through various channels to trace her son, but the search proved unsuccessful.
‎
‎Years later, fate accomplished what years of searching could not.
‎
‎A simple workplace friendship became the bridge that reunited a family separated by adoption for four decades.
‎
‎Despite being adopted, Dave said he had enjoyed a happy upbringing and never felt compelled to search for his birth relatives. Yet discovering them brought an unexpected sense of completeness.
‎
‎At a difficult period in his life, he suddenly gained not only answers about his past but also a sister who had already become his best friend.
‎
‎The reunion also brought comfort to their mother before her death. Both siblings say they are grateful she lived long enough to see her son again and know that he had enjoyed a good life.
‎
‎Today, Dave and Andrea continue to make up for lost time. Living together in Staffordshire, they cherish a relationship that began as friendship and evolved into something far more profound.
‎
‎For them, finding each other remains what they call their “lottery win”—a chance encounter that transformed strangers into family and fulfilled a promise made many years ago.
