Two blood brothers, Beyioku Olatunji (a.k.a Bashorun) and Beyioku Oluwayomi Oluwafemi (a.k.a Ola 1), have been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for presenting themselves as officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Also convicted were eight others. Their names were given as Adeleke Ridwan Adekunle, AbdulFatai Waliu, Adelani Sarafa Yomi, Folarin Ikeoluwa Akinleye, Adebisi Abiola Victor, Adio Toheeb Oladimeji, Ogundulu Oluwashola Temitope and Amoo Rilwan Babatunde.
The 10 convictions were secured by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the EFCC on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, before Justice Mohammed Abubakar of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
EFCC’s Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren said in a statement on Wednesday that Justice Abubakar, in his judgment, convicted and sentenced the Beyioku brothers Olatunji and Oluwafemi, to 18 months imprisonment from the day of their arrest without an option of fine.
Sentencing the remaining eight convicts, Adelani bagged 12 months imprisonment without option of fine, while Adio was jailed six months with an option of N200,000 fine.
Adeleke and Waliu got four months jail sentence each, with an option of N100,000 fine, while Ogundulu was given a sentence of four months imprisonment, with an option of N150,000 fine.
Amoo was given three months jail term with an option of N200,000 fine, while Adebisi and Folarin are to spend three months in a Correctional Centre.
They were, however, given an option of N150,000 as fine each.
The court also ordered the convicts to pay restitutions to their victims.
The Beyioku brothers are to pay their victim, Tawakalitu Lasisi, through the EFCC, the total sum of N1.45 million; Adelani, $3,900; Adeleke, $750; Waliu, $130; Folarin, $500; Adebisi,$800 and N26,000; Adio,$1,500; Ogundulu, $100 and Amoo, N990,694.66.
The Beyioku brothers are to forfeit two iPhone 11, a white Nokia mobile phone, a black iPhone 8 plus mobile handset, a black Nokia mobile phone, a black 4G LTE MTN mobile WiFi, a gold Apple watch series 3 42MM, three Nigeria Police warrant cards belonging to Beyioku Yomi, a Nigeria Police warrant card belonging to Olatunji Joe, a gold necklace, a Honda Crosstour V6 with registration number written as BASHORUN, and a Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4MATIC with registration number written as OLA1.
The eight other convicts are also to forfeit all items recovered from them to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Uwujaren recalled that the Beyioku brothers were arrested in November 2019, for falsely presenting themselves as operatives of the EFCC , with the intent to defraud members of the public.
The two Supernumerary policemen, popularly known as SPY police, were initially arraigned on January 23, 2020, before Justice Abubakar of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, on 18-count charge, bordering on conspiracy, impersonation, forgery, money laundering and obtaining money under false pretence.
They had pleaded not guilty when the charges was read to them, it was learnt, and approached the EFCC for a plea bargain.
Beyioku brothers and the eight other defendants also pleaded guilty to a count charge of impersonation, separately filed against them by the EFCC.
Following their pleas, prosecution counsels – Murtala Usman, Oyelakin Oyediran and Shamsuddeen Bashir – prayed the court to convict them accordingly.
