AT least 10 people were killed and 10 others injured on Sunday after unknown gunmen opened fire in Bekkersdal, a township about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg, police have confirmed.
The attack, which occurred near a tavern or informal bar in the impoverished community, marks the second mass shooting in South Africa this month. Police said the motive for the violence remains unclear.
“Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” the police said in a statement.
Confirming the casualty figure, Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, told AFP: “Ten people are dead. We don’t have a breakdown of who they are.”
Those injured in the shooting were rushed to hospital for treatment. Police added that the attack took place at a location that was allegedly selling alcohol illegally.
Bekkersdal is located near several of South Africa’s major gold mines and is known for widespread poverty and high crime levels.
The incident follows another deadly attack on December 6, when gunmen stormed a hostel near Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child.
South Africa, with a population of about 63 million, continues to grapple with a high crime rate and ranks among countries with the highest murder rates globally.
