Today marks a historic and joyous occasion for the people of Ibadanland as we witness the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Olakulehin Owolabi, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. This momentous event is not only a celebration of our rich cultural heritage but also a promise of a brighter future for our beloved community.

Born on July 5, 1935, in the serene Okugbaja Village near Akanran, now part of the Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria, Oba Olakulehin Owolabi’s life journey has been a remarkable one. His birth was a joyous occasion celebrated by his proud parents, Pa Ishola-Okin Owolabi and Madam Adunola Aweni Ope Ajilaran Omoyoade Owolabi. Following the rich and time-honoured Yoruba tradition, his family waited until the eighth day after his birth to officially bestow upon him his name. In a ceremony held within the family compound on July 12, he was given the name Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin, marking the beginning of a journey that would ultimately lead to his ascension to one of the highest traditional titles in Yorubaland.

Today, on the 89th anniversary of his christening, the boy once known as Baby Olakulehin ascends to the throne as the Olubadan of Ibadanland in a grand ceremony at the historic Mapo Hall. This significant event, which will see him don the prestigious beaded crown symbolising his new status and authority, marks a momentous occasion not only for him and his family but also for the entire community that holds the Olubadan title in high esteem. He has chosen to bear the name of the family, Olubadan Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin 1, lifting the banner of his ancestors as the first from his lineage to become the Olubadan.

The coronation was witnessed by the crème-de-la-crème and influential personalities from across the country and beyond. Dignitaries led by governors, ministers, eminent traditional rulers, captains of industries, and academics, among others, gather at the historic Mapo Hall, built in 1929, to witness the coronation of the 43rd Olubadan. This contrasted with the intimate family compound naming ceremony held 89 years ago, showcasing the significant progress and recognition that His Imperial Majesty has achieved.

Oba Olakulehin Owolabi ascends the throne with a wealth of experience, wisdom, and a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of the people of Ibadanland. His journey to this esteemed position has been marked by a commitment to service, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to the progress and prosperity of our land. As we welcome our new monarch, we are filled with hope and optimism for the transformative changes that his reign will bring.

The coronation of His Imperial Majesty signifies a new era of leadership that is rooted in the traditions of our ancestors while embracing the possibilities of the future. Oba Olakulehin Owolabi’s vision for Ibadanland is one of unity, development, and inclusiveness. He has articulated a clear and compelling plan to address the challenges facing our community, from improving infrastructure and healthcare to enhancing education and economic opportunities for all.

Under his wise and benevolent leadership, we can expect a renewed focus on leveraging our cultural heritage as a catalyst for tourism and economic growth. His Imperial Majesty has expressed a commitment to preserving and celebrating our traditions while also fostering innovation and modernization. This balanced approach ensures that Ibadanland will not only honor its past but also thrive in the present and future.

Moreover, Oba Olakulehin Owolabi’s reign promises to be a beacon of hope for the youth of Ibadanland. Recognizing that the future of our community lies in the hands of our young people, His Imperial Majesty is dedicated to empowering the next generation with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed. By investing in education, mentorship, and entrepreneurship, he aims to cultivate a vibrant and dynamic youth population that will drive the continued growth and development of Ibadanland.

As we celebrate this coronation, we are reminded of the strength, resilience, and unity that have always defined the people of Ibadanland. His Imperial Majesty, Oba Olakulehin Owolabi, embodies these qualities and stands as a symbol of our collective aspirations. His leadership is a promise that together, we will overcome any challenges and build a future that is prosperous, inclusive, and filled with boundless opportunities.

It is a time of great promise and potential, as we look forward to a future that is brighter and more prosperous under his wise and visionary leadership. Let us unite in support of our new monarch and work together to realize the full promise of this new era for our beloved Ibadanland.

Long live His Imperial Majesty.

Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Long live Ibadanland.
Long live Oyo State.

Hon. Wale Ajani is the immediate past Director-General, Oyo State Liaison Offices (Abuja & Lagos).
