Panic and fear gripped the Ipele area of Owo Local Government in Ondo State on Wednesday night, December 31, 2025, following a brazen attack by suspected bandits on the local police station.
According to eyewitness accounts, about 20 to 30 heavily armed men stormed the community at around 9:40 p.m..
The assailants opened sporadic gunfire, forcing residents and police officers to flee for safety as terror spread through the normally quiet neighbourhood.
The attackers specifically targeted the Ipele Divisional Police Headquarters, firing assault rifles and reportedly using explosives before setting the building ablaze.
Several exhibits and property within the police station were destroyed in the inferno, though the police command has stated that no fatalities have been confirmed so far.
In response, the Ondo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, condemned the assault and confirmed the destruction of the facility.
In an official statement, the police clarified that reports of a church attack circulating on social media are inaccurate. The command said investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected as the situation develops.
A joint security response involving personnel from the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other agencies was promptly mobilised to secure the area.
Though the bandits had long fled by the time reinforcements arrived, additional tactical units — including mobile force and explosive ordnance teams — have been deployed to prevent further attacks and to pursue the perpetrators.
Residents described a terrifying scene, recounting how gunshots and explosions forced many to flee into nearby bushes to evade harm. Local leaders and families are now urging heightened security and reassurance as investigations continue.
Authorities have also launched a manhunt for those involved and reiterated a call for community cooperation with security agencies to ensure peace returns to the embattled community.
