•Nab two suspected traffic robbers
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a unit of the Lagos State Police Command, have impounded three vehicles for covering their number plates and 43 motorcycles for plying prohibited routes in Alausa Business District, Ikeja.
This followed the directives of the police command to its operatives to go after unregistered vehicles, vehicles with covered number plates, fake number plates and unauthorised use of siren.
The police spokesman in the state, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Sunday, January 20, 2021, said that the vehicles and motorcycles were impounded on Friday, January 8.
The PPRO disclosed that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had warned vehicle owners against acts of illegality towards the end of 2020, as a result of intelligence gathered on the planned usage of these categories of vehicles and motorcycles to commit crimes.
“In compliance with the order, police operatives in the state have been on the trail of violators, who are fond of using unregistered vehicles, covered and fake number plates, unauthorised use of siren or revolving light, with many of them prosecuted and fined accordingly.
“The Commissioner of Police, while reaffirming his zero tolerance for traffic offences and the like, ordered the RRS Commander to intensify efforts in impounding any vehicles or bikes found wanting in this regard,” the PPRO stated.
He said further that the police commissioner was shocked at the number of vehicles violating the order, and motorcycles being ridden within Alausa Business District, which was a prohibited route for motorcycles.
Advising Lagos residents to desist from such illegality, the command also warned government workers, who encourage commercial motorcycle riders to flout the rules on prohibited routes, to stop such acts, as the RRS had been directed by the police commissioner to impound such bikes and prosecute both the riders and passengers.
Adejobi added that Odumosu had ordered that the three vehicles and 43 motorcycles impounded be transfered to Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Offences.
Meanwhile, two suspected traffic robbers have been arrested by RRS operatives.
This was sequel to efforts of the command to curtail traffic robbery in the state.
The suspects, identified as Dada Owolabi (52) and Kolawole Olawoye (25) were arrested on Saturday, January 9, 2021, along Ogudu/Alapere road, according to the PPRO.
The suspects were said to have been arrested at different points at about 10p.m., and had been assisting the police to apprehend other fleeing members of their gangs.
Adejobi further said that the state police boss had directed that the suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for proper investigation.
