April 12, 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin an immediate naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions with Iran following the collapse of high-level peace talks.
In a statement released Sunday, Trump said the U.S. Navy would prevent ships from entering or exiting the strategically critical waterway, a move aimed at countering Iran’s growing control over the passage and its reported efforts to impose tolls on international shipping.
The decision comes after negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials in Islamabad ended without agreement, with major disagreements centered on Iran’s nuclear program and regional demands.
Trump accused Iran of engaging in what he described as “extortion” by attempting to charge vessels for safe passage through the strait, which handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil shipments.
Under the new directive, U.S. forces are expected to intercept vessels attempting to transit the strait and may target ships that have paid fees to Iran.
The president also authorized military action to remove naval mines that Iran is believed to have deployed in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the most vital chokepoints for global energy supplies. Disruptions there have already contributed to rising oil prices and heightened fears of a broader economic shock.
The blockade represents one of the most aggressive U.S. military steps in the ongoing conflict, which began earlier this year after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran, including efforts to restrict access to the strait.
Analysts warn the move could further destabilize the region and increase the risk of direct confrontation between U.S. and Iranian forces, with potential global consequences for energy markets and international trade.
The situation remains fluid, with no immediate response from Iranian officials at the time of the announcement.
