LAGOS – Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The news of the actor’s death emerged days after his daughters publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance for their father, revealing that he was battling Stage Four cancer and required specialised treatment.
Hassan, one of the most respected figures in the Yoruba movie industry, was said to have been in critical condition in recent weeks.
His family had earlier disclosed that doctors could no longer continue chemotherapy due to the advanced stage of the disease.
The actor’s deteriorating health had generated widespread concern among fans, colleagues and well-wishers across Nigeria, with many offering prayers and support for his recovery.
Ogogo was a household name in the Nigerian film industry, renowned for his commanding screen presence and memorable roles in numerous Yoruba and Nollywood productions spanning more than four decades.
He built a reputation for portraying strong, authoritative and often heroic characters, earning admiration from audiences across generations.
Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, Hassan began his acting career in the early 1980s and rose to prominence through several blockbuster Yoruba films.
Beyond acting, he also worked as a producer and director, contributing significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s indigenous film sector.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow actors, filmmakers, fans and cultural organisations, many describing him as a legend whose contributions helped shape the Yoruba arm of Nollywood.
