Tuesday, February 24, 2026 — The United States Mission in Nigeria has moved to calm worries among Nigerian students abroad and those preparing to travel to America, stating that holders of valid F-1 and J-1 visas will not be impacted by recent US visa restrictions.
In a statement posted on social media by the US mission on Monday, officials clarified that international students and exchange visitors who already possess valid F-1 (academic) and J-1 (exchange) visas can continue their studies and programmes in the United States without disruption.
The reassurance comes after the introduction of Presidential Proclamation 10998, a policy aimed at tightening entry rules for nationals of several countries, including Nigeria.
The proclamation, which came into effect on January 1, 2026, restricts the issuance of certain visas—such as visitor and some student and exchange visas—to foreign nationals who do not already hold valid visas.
Officials emphasised that the measures do not retroactively cancel visas that were valid when the proclamation took effect.
As a result, Nigerian students and cultural exchange participants with current F-1 or J-1 visas remain eligible to enter and participate in educational and research activities at US institutions.
The clarification is expected to ease worries among thousands of Nigerian students, many of whom were uncertain whether the new restrictions would affect their status or travel plans.
