An operator of a mini bus popularly called Korope was on Friday, August 9, killed by a truck driver accused of overspeeding and recklessness at Ile Zik, inward Mangoro in Lagos State.
Thenewsbearer learnt that the incident occurred at about 8:35am.
Confirming this in a statement, the Head, Public Affairs Unit, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, said that information about the incident came from distress calls through the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines, prompting the movement of the Agency’s Eagle Response Team from Cappa to the scene.
He said that on arrival at the scene at about 8:48am, the response team discovered an articulated Howo truck with registration number MEK 945 XA and a mini bus (Korope) with registration number AGL 287 YJ that were involved in an accident at aforementioned location.
According to Okunbor, preliminary investigations conducted by the team revealed that the immediate cause of the accident was reckless driving and over-speeding by the Howo truck driver, whose vehicle collided with the mini bus from behind.
The collision resulted in the mini bus crashing into the fence of a nearby shopping complex, which led to the death of its driver.
His corpse was bagged by the team and later handed over to the officials of State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
The driver of the truck was also said to have been injured and taken to an undisclosed hospital before the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team.
In order to ensure the safety of responders while at scene the operation, the agency’s spokesman said that the scene of the incident was cordoned off.
Also, in collaboration with the police personnel and the state traffic management agency, LASTMA, road traffic control measures were activated to manage the traffic situation to forestall any secondary incident during the recovery operation.
Okunbor said that all responders worked together to ensure a quick and successful operation in order to restore normalcy to the road in that axis.
He added that the truck had been recovered from the fence and towed to Dopemu Police Station.
The spokesman stated further that the road had been re-opened for vehicular activities after the conclusion of the recovery operation.
