Two persons lost their lives while several others sustained injuries in a tragic multiple road accident that also involved pedestrians, which occurred at Soka Junction, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday, April 4, at about 10p.m.
The accident was reported to have been caused when a HOWO truck driver, one Abdullahi Bashiru, who lost control following alleged reckless driving and excessive speed.
The Public Relations Officer in Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, who confirmed the incident early on Sunday, April 5, disclosed that in addition to the deceased and injured persons, the vehicles involved and badly damaged in the multiple accident included a Toyota Venza and a BMW car, among others
“Preliminary findings revealed that the accident was caused by a white HOWO truck with registration number Gombe GEM696XE, driven by one Abdullahi Bashiru. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to reckless driving and excessive speed, ramming into other vehicles and pedestrians,” Ayanlade stated.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, who commiserated with the families of the deceased, prayed for the quick recovery of the injured victims.
CP Abimbola, who said that a thorough investigation had commenced to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident, assured the general public that the Command would ensure that justice is served.
Members of the public, particularly motorists, were advised to exercise caution, adhere strictly to traffic regulations, and avoid excessive speed to prevent needless loss of lives.
