A suspected bandit, Michael Osundu, from Owerri, Imo State, who allegedly claimed to be London-based, has been arrested by the command’s operatives.
Thenewsbearer gathered that the suspect was arrested when the operatives were on surveillance and confidence-building patrol.
The state police spokesman, SP Ikeokwu Godson Orlando, said in a statement on Sunday, May 16, 2021, that Osundu was arrested in connection with criminal activities in the state, and was suspected to be part of the hoodlums that attacked the Nigeria Correctional Services and the police headquarters on April 5, 2021.
Recovered from him were an English-made pump-action rifle, 26 live cartridges, a pair of police uniform with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), which was hidden in his tinted Toyota Escalade vehicle.
The PPRO said that when the suspect was interrogated, he claimed to be a Supernumerary (Spy) police, trained at the Police Training School, Ikeja.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yayo, had ordered an investigation into the matter, with a view of discovering his level of culpability and possibly arresting other suspects.
“He (Yaro) further used the opportunity to call on any person who participated in the attack of April 5, 2021, as well as the escapee inmates/suspects, to turn themselves in, or else they will be made to face the full wrath of the law if caught.
The police commissioner also charged members of the public to partner with the command by volunteering credible information to the police, which might lead to arresting criminal elements in and around the state.
