Two of the armed men who stormed Umutu police station in Delta State in their large number for an attack, in the early hours of today, May 28, 2021, at about 1:30a.m., were gunned by police operatives, while others fled with injuries.
However, the Command lost two policemen in the fight, while one Assistant Superintendent of Police died in the hospital as a result of high blood pressure.
The armed men, who were shooting sporadically as they approached the police station, were reportedly met with stiff resistance by policemen on duty, as they gave them a hard fight before they retreated.
The acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, who spoke on the resistance by the police, said that the armed men’s retreat was due to proactive measures already put in place by the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ali Ari, which they saw when the policemen on duty were unrelenting.
The acting PPRO said that the gunmen came with the intention of causing mayhem, burning the station and carting away arms, but did not succeed, as they could not penetrate the station.
DSP Bright added that they quickly beat a retreat, carrying their dead members along.
With normalcy restored, he said that the Commissioner of Police assured members of the public that every measure had been put in place to arrest those responsible for the act, while urging them to help with useful and timely information.
